• I had an interesting interaction with my Mom yesterday. Every few weeks, she makes copies of various home activities and emails them to the entire family. I don’t think anyone reads them. I guess the idea is so that if she passes away, people are not lost in the process of paying things. People are like, “Well, if we need to, we can open the attachments later.”

I also feel like it’s very important. Things like the phone bill and repair services are understandable, but things like internet seem silly. If she passed away, we would probably cancel most services except electricity and power and try to move out within a few months.

The mail services are always an issue whenever we have to pay. I don’t know, maybe I’m misunderstanding because of my experience when my father passed away three years ago. I thought maybe I should ask her how it was, but maybe it’s the memory. So maybe I should look it up.

  • I had a dream that we were in a very tall building or apartment with Christine. It felt like a mix between the Grand Hyatt Busan, which is the tallest building, and the Grand Hyatt Taipei because the Taipei 101 was there

Then there there was an earthquake. It feels a little bit like you’re in the building, but also in a train. We were looking out the windows, and suddenly, I noticed one of the buildings we were looking at outside was leaning 90 degrees momentarily. I thought it was an earthquake, so I said, “Oh baby, there’s an earthquake coming! Let’s run to the middle of the building.” So I just grabbed her, and we ran to the middle of the building—the middle of the floor—so that we would feel the shaking less (dream logic).

So we went to the middle, and from there, we saw how the other buildings were starting to shake. We started to feel it. At the same time, we were on a train, watching this building while the train was moving, passing by the window very quickly. That’s 200 or something.

Then we cut off the train and we were in the shopping district downtown. We had to get on the next train; we had to change trains there. had breakfast to meet with Grace. So, this train station has multiple lines. We are getting pretty close because we need the case, 950, 940, with her. We decided to make use of the time and meet with her while we ate breakfast.

The train station was packed. Our students, we had to take the red line. The red line is very busy and transitionally packed, and there are like multiple spots where you could just step into the rails, just like the A line. It was a very basic setup: train left and train going right on the same line, and a train passing that was blue.

We were waiting at the spot. I was like, “Oh, okay, train. You’re waiting.Something was physically uncomfortable. I’m going to go or something, so I separated. Maybe I want to find out where to take the train. I was like, “Oh, here is like that.” I remember at one point I was sitting on the floor, still drinking, my legs too close to the rail. I tried to move it a little bit; it was very close, like nothing.

I’m trying to get back to the transition pack, so I don’t know, we’re going to be late for lunch with Grace.

A bunch of students got on the bus, and then the students left, getting on another bus that came right after. Some people were talking Korean, some people were talking Korean English. So I asked them if this bus goes to downtown, to the harbor. I thought that was down.

From there, I tried calling. I called the bus too. I pulled up the maps on my iPhone and for some reason, it appeared 3D. I was looking up against what I could see in the window, trying to figure out where this bus was going and if it was going towards downtown or not. I remember there was this big cluster, a big building there. There’s another cluster lower. I was trying to figure out that area and this other area next to the lower one. I mean, so far.

  • I had a lengthy dream, kind of scary in the first part. I was with a group of people, running some errands. I hadn’t seen the main location in a long time. We walked out of the train station. The main focus of that first part of the dream was that we had six animals. Three were squirrels—small, large, and medium size. The other three were cats. This first part wasn’t scary, though; it was the most dynamic.

The six animals were kind of doing their own thing. They mostly stuck with us, but sometimes they’d check out things before leaving or going to another place to follow us. I can remember their names, or something like that, when they came. They’re like little babies, making clicking sounds. Sometimes I just had to grab them.

I remember a brown cat that I carried most of the time. It was in a little plastic container that looked like a cover on the back. I remember a little time later, something just jumped on the passenger. Interesting.

I think there are more things about the first part of the dream. The second part, we were doing this transport. The most apocalyptic feature was the station. The travel—if everything just happened inside the station. Our air—I stepped out and walked out into the outside of a train station, like temperature. Traffic. People walking around. The people walking around are a little bit strange. Close, and you can see the gums. The gums are its quality. I don’t know why.

Okay, let’s go to the destination. I tried to walk with purpose, left the station, and just found some random door building. We were walking to the door; we just pushed that. The second part of the step is everyone is under attack. We stepped over; I probably got one or two, but the others are still out there. Ready to remove the other four. I started grabbing each one and putting them inside through the door. I picked one of our big black Scrubs. It’s one of the semi-zombies, and I think that’s not too far from our six. I closed the door to a sitting room immediately connecting with multiple bedrooms in the hotel living area.

Before relaxing a little bit, I looked like they were occupied very recently. I could see that there was just stuff there, like they just got out—it was messy. We needed to make sure that we were safe in the building. So, some of us went up a ladder and started checking.

I was back by the stairs, near a back structure. We were still in the house part. People were one by one starting to get off, and then creatures gathered back here. It was like many houses of creatures that merged. I remember the most was like a big, shapeless monster starting to take a look in our direction. My intuition was that more radioactive people from the future would try to scare them away.

I started making things. I built something like a support to push away the main door to the court on the side. There’s a ruthless room there, I think it was room 16. On the side, there was a wall attached to the main wall. We opened the door and looked out. I don’t remember if we looked out, but I think we looked out through that door. Close to the door, people still came out and started making things.

There was another one that was more human. Somehow, we saw that he was pressing levers and adjusting things, and I was like, “Oh my god, this door, this wall is very weak.” We heard or saw that that person was present.

He was trying to talk to us in a completely different language, but because of the origins of the world, we were able to understand. I said, “Okay, thank you,” and went back his way. Now that we were scared, we came back to secure the house and make sure that person was back behind the door.

After we settled the house, we were like, “Okay, let’s go back to that again.” I think throughout this whole process, the six animals are still focused on gathering in this place. The door was very cute and was fading back into the straight back. The next was for some people to explore further and maybe the surprise, surprise, I guess. I think she was doing something scary in the house, kind of in the darker with flashlights, and I think around there, shaking. So I can trouble a stranger. I never had a dream like this. This one is new.

  • I wonder if, looking back at 2020, I was doing fine with it until 2021. Around 2020, I started feeling like, “Oh, it’s not doing much for me; it feels stuck often.” Then I saw news of the Philips CPAP recall. I followed it and started to wonder if this problem was due to the recall, even though the recall had nothing to do with the effectiveness of the machine.

It was related to some users washing the machines with chemicals that were too strong, which caused the degradation of some internal components. That meant that fumes from the degraded material were going through the CPAP. So, they changed their conditions to make sure people didn’t use certain corrosive things to wash it. This had nothing to do with me because I barely wash it, maybe just with water twice a month or something.

I wonder if there’s some paranoia about that and I’m seeing that it’s not working, etc. I’m still waking up. I’m having that crazy, strange thing where I get up somewhere between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m.

  • Yesterdya ive been having fun with having google gemini To summarize my emails over the past 25 years and summarize different life events or life phases, I’m looking at a couple of things, but there are some gaps. I should do a couple of different things that complement this.

First is my block of WordPress exports—the main block. Second is photos on YouTube. I should remind you to check the YouTube channel. Third is social media. If there is a way to efficiently export just the text part of the social media posts (Facebook, Twitter), that would be helpful. Fourth, maybe an index of the personal items in Dropbox. Dropbox itself is too large, but an index would be great. This would cover family timelines.

So, I think, yeah, that could be interesting.

  • All right. The past few days when I got to record… Oh, so today is Friday. The past few days when I got… Usually a combination of those… I’ve been trying to process and record the same things. Yeah. Focus on not forgetting these interesting thoughts that could be helpful later for work ideas. I was very focused on not getting to this room to get some new information: emails, money updates. Maybe just by forgetting them and getting them… Sometimes I just write them down for later. That’s what happens months before. I look at the notes. I think maybe I’ll forget. I think I was feeling this is useful. I’m not going to remember the logistics of how to…

  • I was told this, is it true? “Business Class award space to many destinations in Asia is extremely expensive right now. In most cases, we’re seeing prices 3 to 4 times higher than those often promoted by travel blogs. For example, a round-trip Business Class award ticket may realistically cost 450,000 to 600,000+ miles per person, plus any airline-imposed taxes and fees.”

Depends on how you frame it.

“expensive right now” -> wrong. It’s always been expensive. Also, it’s not unique to Asia. It’s the same for every continent.

“3-4 times higher than those promoted” -> correct. What’s wrong is to claim that this is a situation unique to today.

“realistically” -> aha! Here is the framing.

I’m going to modify this person’s statement to not twist the facts. Business Class award space to anywhere from the United States is extremely rare. It’s been extremely rare for 5+ years.

By extremely rare we mean that when you start planning your trip 3-6 months out (like most normal people) and you pull up the award prices, you never see the 70k prices that bloggers talk about. You see 450k prices, which is the airline’s dynamically priced cost.

It is only at the “what if I fly out this Wednesday” and “what about 12 months out from now?” and “oh right now Delta (or some airline) is running a sale of some spots to Taipei (and only Taipei!) for May-September flights, but they only have 4 seats in available dates and they sell out in 1-2 days” that you find those 70k-115k prices. And it’s not even every day, they randomly do not appear at 12 months for whatever reason (peak season, etc). It’s not reliable. There is some luck and some “you know what I’ll fly to another airport 2 hours away to catch my business class flight because that’s where I found a seat on my desired date”.

We call this situation “rare”. It’s extremely rare to find these business class tickets, and it involves luck and lots of work.

For someone for whom 1) “rare” is unacceptable or 2) doesn’t want to bother doing the work or 3) doesn’t want to bother changing travel dates or departure airports to meet the availability – in other words, just wants to go to Expedia and click and purchase, then yes, “realistically”, it’s 450k miles. Because “rare availability” is not an option for them.

    That’s why it’s a matter of framing.

    Here is the modified statement:

“Business Class award space at low prices to anywhyere out of the United States is extremely rare. To find those prices, you will need to plan your travel like a BTS Concert ticket purchase plan. If you don’t, then you will see prices 3 to 4 times higher than those often promoted by travel blogs.

If you don’t plan ahead and simply go to the airline’s website to press “buy”, you will only find 99% of round-trip Business Class award tickets at 450,000 to 600,000+ miles per person, plus any airline-imposed taxes and fees.”

  • Today is the 28th, I think. Yesterday, we dropped off Joy and we had to be my uncle. Interesting. We had a brief chance to talk about the governor’s race. The top five candidates are two Republicans and three Democrats. There’s pressure on the trailing candidates to drop out so the Democrat votes consolidate.

I remember, I think in 2010, the top two primary system was introduced. One analysis of the top two primary system—it must have been used elsewhere too—is that it introduces the possibility that both candidates in the final ticket are of the same party if the votes of the other party are split across multiple candidates. That’s what’s happening now. Right now, the top two are Republicans. Because of that, there is all this pressure for the Democrats to drop out. Usually, the more pressure there is to drop out, the smaller the progressive support for the candidates. So, right now the pressure is… nothing is decided. Okay, I mean, I can’t imagine being too popular.

Yeah, so I guess in this scenario, which is not that advantageous towards the more conservative mainstream, that’s why you need a single transfer system. It allows for a more extended choice in how you vote because then you can vote for the person you want without having to worry that it’s a wasted vote.

Democrats, they would support something like that because that means they are in a much more precarious position in the primaries. Voters who voted just to prevent the Republican from winning would now be voting for the candidate they want.

That made me think, if the mainstream Democrat is afraid of not being supported by a significant portion—or even the majority—of Democrat voters, doesn’t that mean that person is not mainstream? I need to analyze this stuff to see if it makes sense, but that’s something that’s true.

  • I was thinking about my therapist. I have concerns about the therapy style, and maybe I should ask these questions to Gemini or to someone in a friend group, maybe a therapist. I don’t know.

I need to bring up my concerns about the style. In a previous session, my therapist, especially later on, was very focused on exploring things together and asking follow-up questions. They made me search for why I felt a certain way and what was at the bottom of these healing emotions. After each session, I felt like I found things.

The current therapy style is very shallow. I start explaining an issue for about 10 minutes, and the therapist stops me, interjecting and sharing her own opinion about the topic, correcting me if my thoughts don’t align with hers, or sharing some episode that relates to it. Then, I listen to her, and I think, “Okay, this isn’t therapy; it’s a conversation. Let’s listen.” After the conversation, I guess I lose track of things. It’s like, “Oh, we finished talking about this topic now.” So, I feel like something in that interaction blocks me from exploring the topic. I think there are still things to explore.

Therapy, especially last year, was great; very deep times. Although, after a few sessions, it felt a little repetitive, maybe like it was dialectical. We find X issue, and then we have the minus X. Sometimes therapists help me reach a conclusion, or sometimes they ask the questions for me to arrive at the conclusion. At some point, you’re cycling back to the same threads. Whenever it became cyclical, the therapist would notice it. I lose interest in the conversation. I’m not sure what it is.

Yeah, with the cramps still… There are benefits to having conversations, but there’s too much interruption and too much of her own stories. I talked about that. If that’s not something she can fix, I think I need to find a different therapist. I think the other therapist I had before—the guy in Silver Lake, the first one in 2020 or 2021—was better. That vision circle therapist, at some point, said they were going on vacation for a couple of months, so I had to continue something like that. The second vision circle was in 2024 or late 2025 and was very expensive. I can’t remember; I should look at my history. Maybe I should make a Google section for therapists.

  • I had AA Plat for two years by luck. I don’t use it often but it’s very attractive. Especially getting to use MCE for free. I had given up on being able to renew AA Plat for 2027 – meal kits are not giving LP as often as before and doing AA Hotels is pretty expensive when almost all my AA flights are reward flights.

I realized that under Alaska’s new rules (partner award tickets get status points based on distance), I make it just barely to 40k for Atmos Gold this year. So I looked at the LAX-BOS originally bookked with 23k AA, and switched to the same flight with 35k AS to add some buffer to the mileage count.

  • Chase Manipulating Award Transfer to prevent their easy use

I’m curious is there are any other others there who have run into Chase delaying the award travel points transfer for up to 7 days, effectively killing award reservations that only have a few-day grace period? Chase does cover themselves legally by saying that most travel point transfers happen instantly, but may take up to 7 days. I am currently stuck in the 7 days case (for the first time ever) with no explanation of why, and am about to lose an excellent reservation with KLM (who has a 3 day grace period) with no explanation from Chase as to why the delay. I am wondering if Chase is doing this strategically to force me to use points using Chase Travel (which would cost me almost five times the number of points as my direct KLM reservation (now about to be canceled), and here we’re talking about points worth over $10,000… I’m not paranoid, but I can believe some automated system selectively delaying point transfers when they see an opportunity to force customers to their own travel service even if grossly unfair to the customer. This believe was reinforced when talking to a supposedly more senior escalation representative who actually suggested I use Chase Travel due to the delay (the fact that I don’t have nearly enough points to do that notwithstanding). If there are others out there with similar experiences, I’d like to hear from you. If this really is Chase manipulating the system to benefit their own travel service, this could result in a class action suit, which I am willing to entertain starting to investigate if there is evidence that this is what is happening. Randy Frank

Well, that sounds frustrating. I’m sorry for your loss.

As humans, we are drawn to the idea that the universe revolves around me, and this is particularly acute with U.S. as corporate marketing tends to really hone in on this to drive sales. So it’s understandable.. to have this line of thinking.

Doing a benefits analysis can help dispell this misconception.

Let’s say that there’s a $10,000 flight, selling for 100k airline miles. And you can transfer from Chase, and 100k Chase points is worth $1,000.

When you book this flight with 100k points, someone is not making the $9,000 potential revenue that could have been made if sold with cash. So your theory is that Chase missed out on $9,000 profit and that’s why they are manipulating transfers.

Chase actually doesn’t make a $9,000 profit. That’s the airline. When you use 1M points to book a $10,000 flight through Chase Travel, Chase pays the airline $10,000 and probably gets some % commission from the airline. Let’s say, just to make up some numbers, that they get 5%, so $500. (To simplify calculations, let’s ignore the CSP/CSR 25%/50% bonus)

On the other hand, if you transfer 100k points to the airline, Chase gets the $1,000 (100k points) at some pre-agreed upon rate (probably something lower like $500) from the airline. Chase doesn’t know whether your intention with those 100k points is to book a crappy $600 flight or to book a $10,000 fllight. In fact, of those few customer who transfer points, most pople transfer to United and book a crappy $600 domestic flight with those points.

Now let’s compare where does Chase make more money.

It’s $500 for Travel Portal vs $500 points transfer, so it’s the same profit, right?

No. Chase made $500 profit when you spent 1 million points at Chase Travel.

On the other hand, you spend 100k points and Chase still made a $500 profit. If you transferred 1 million points, Chase would have made a $5,000 profit.

In other words, Chase makes 10x more profit when you transfer points to the airlines. Maybe my % assumption is wrong – maybe Chase gets only $200, not $500, for every 100k you transfer. That’s still twice of the profit they would make through the Travel Portal.

Chase doesn’t have a profit motive to make the transfer difficult.

The airline, on the other hand, is in a different position. The airline would prefer you to book with cash, not points. So maybe they are manipulating the system and they give under-the-table payments to Chase for their reps to play dumb with you and delay it until the award ticket is gone… right?

No. There’s two fallacies with this logic.

First, the award ticket is not “gone”. Someone else booked it with points. So from the airline’s perspective, they still took the L, just not with you – someone else.

Second, the airline already has mechanisms in place to ensure customers don’t get too much out of transferring points or just points in general. They restrict seats.

It’s a big airplane. It has 50 business class seats and 300 economy seats.

But in each airplane, you can only book 2 business seats at saver rate and maybe 10 economy seats at saver rate. For KLM & AF, it’s worse, there’s only 1-2 flights in a month where they make thse 2 seats available. They don’t even release it every other day.

So the real cabal in the game is how stingy airlines are with business saver availability. They are making sure that for all the other 48 business seats, they are raking in the $10,000 profit.

In fact, they have algorithms in place to try to predict which flights will have spare, empty seats. And usually it’s THOSE seats that they make available at business saver rates.

So basically, we are going to the bakery to get free giveaways. The bakery knows that they cooked 50 baguettes, but they will only sell 45-48 baguettes today given past sales trends. So they give you two baguettes for free (not really free but you get the idea).

So we are begging for leftover crumbs at the bakery, and there are bumps and glitches in the process, and coming up with conspiracy theories on why they are not giving me the crumbs.

There is no conspiracy needed. It’s just crumbs, sometimes we can’t get them. And bakery owner doesn’t really care that much either way.

But, maybe you should do you and file a class action lawsuit and see where it goes. Hopefully we’ll get more crumbs. Can we get 4 baguettes each day? That would be great.

  • needs to be scrapped in favor of a new, more modern app.

I think we should be careful what we wish for. I can see them remaking the app with beautiful curves and intuitive workflow and then implementing a required “foreigner registration number” into the ticket purchase procedure.

“We improved national security and ensured only lawful foreigners are aboard our transportation systems, working together with Homeland Security by integrating a registration number verification system.”

“What? Tourists don’t have a registration number? Oh… hmm”

“Well, they don’t speak Korean anyway, they didn’t need the app”

“The app has an English option…? Why?”

“I don’t think we can remove the registration number requirement, because then the app would be not in compliance with Assembly Law Number 25-093”

“Oh well. We’ll talk to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to require all tourists to register and receive the registration system prior to each visit then. This way they can use the Korail app, while also ensuring tourism doesn’t endanger national security. Especially all those Chinese tourists.”

  • I was planning to apply to a BizPlat and PerPlat in December, and just biding my time until that happened.

I went 5k over MSR on my latest card (lots of unexpected expenses), the Hilton Surpass. It still can get a FNA after meeting $15k by end of year… although its value is questionable.

I felt I was wasting away spend, and applied for a P1 BizGold LL with referral (this would be my third bizgold) two weeks ago for 200k+30k $15k MSR. 6mo-0%APR The application never went anywhere. It didn’t even register in the application status page.

So last weekend I had P2 apply for a NLL 200k $10k, which was instantly approved. Then I learned about the immediate PizPlat upgrade trick to get 120k more out of the same spend and was pondering it.. hmm will this be worth the extra annual fee..

And then three days later the original BizGold was approved. I guess we are just doing these two until December and not any other BizPlats, then.

  • Booked domestic transcon first class with Avios. Then rebooked in economy, still saving $900 in the process.

    • LAX-DCA AA F for 43k+$10 Avios via Qatar (cash $800), 3 people, D-6 -> cancelled
    • LAX-DCA AA Y for 11k+$5 Avios via Finnair (cash $450), 2 people, D-3 -> flown
    • Return flight in cash

My mother recently had a major spinal surgery and has been in recovery for a few weeks now. During labor day weekend, we had to urgently travel from LAX to DCA. She was unsure whether the travel would be okay given her recent surgery. Her doctor said it was okay. I thought we could ease her worry if we booked it in first class, and luckily found some D-6 in AA first with Qatar Avios! A Friday 9am flight! Booked LAX-DCA for three at 43k Avios+$10 pp, for $800 tickets. Also found that Alaska was running lowered first class prices, and booked return flights in frst at $730 pp.

Then we had a sudden change of circumstances and had to postpone the trip two weeks. We cancelled, and now we were stuck with a big stash of Alaska flight credits. Mom wanted to drain the credits ASAP. So we booked us the flights again. Then, mom’s health worsened and she had to cancel. We still had to go, so my wife and her sister went to DC.

Unfortunately, there was no AA nor AS partner F availability this time.

We were about to book the crazily overpriced D-4 $450 LAX-DCA oneway Y tickets with Alaska credits, and I said wait a minute.. maybe we can book these for just 11k Avios via Finnair! And there they were, luckily available.

On the return, they are flying AS F with the flight credits. ($850/pp)

We were left with $480 in leftover Alaska credits. I told them we’ll book them the AA Y flights, and we’ll take the leftover Alaska credits for ourselves in exchange. (Since these flight credits belong to my mom.) Combined with an Alaska companion voucher, the credits will cover us for a roundtrip for two to somewhere in Mexico.

Family saved money, and we got ourselves a two-person roundtrip to Mexico for 22k Avios. Everyone is happy.

  • > Why does no one post on Instagram anymore?

I only post on social media from my computer, where I can fully engage with the text, copy/edit, separate paragraphs, quote others, include hyperlinks, etc. When I type on my smartphone, I feel caged.

Instagram doesn’t allow computer access. I have to create a fake User-agent data via a browser plugin to coax Instagram into allowing me to post photos from my computer. I see people writing long essays on Instagram or posting screenshots of stuff they typed, or saying “hey I can’t put the link in this post but go to my profile’s linktree and click on the 14th button” and I’m like wow.. y’all are recreating the wheel.

Since it doesn’t let me post, I don’t open or engage with the app either. I open it about once a month to look at a reel link that someone shared via text message. Then I notice that there is a red notification indicating a ton of reel DMs sent to me since the last time I logged in. I ignore that notification. None of them are real DMs. I figure it’s a medium for people who are digitally illiterate, all they know to do is pinch, zoom and tap.

I experimented briefly with Instagram a couple years ago, and after experiecing these shortcomings, I created a new WordPress blog with a photoblog theme, where I can type and hyperlink to my heart’s content, shit’s searchable and content can be structured and organized in whatever format I want it to, and can live in a content ecosystem. That’s my Instagram.

    Ballot Measure Information & Recommendations

    > No on 6
    > Why we’re against it
    > Proposition 6 bans mandatory work requirements for state prison inmates. It doesn’t seem fair to further increase the burden on taxpayers by creating the conditions to negotiate higher wages for inmates who are paying off their debt to society by serving their sentences in state prison. VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 6.

They also got a typo on 36:

    > Yes on 36
    > Why we’re against it
